Yesterday was a big day for Poland and, for us. The day Germany invaded Poland. Britain, having been dragged into this unwelcome War unwillingly rapidly found that Poland proved to be one of the staunchest Allies one could wish for.
Without them it may well have proved impossible for Bletchley to have broken Enigma for some years, if at all.
145 pilots out of 1103 who fought in the Battle of Britain were Poles, 30 were killed and they destroyed 203 planes.
They lost some 4,000 troops in the battle for Monte Cassino.
There was no home leave for them; no letters.
We owe them a debt as do they us.
Oh, and by the way, another awful outcome of that disaster known as the 'Treaty of Versailles'. Will we ever see the end of it? It has been the root of every conflict in Europe, the Balkans and the Middle east since it was forced upon everyone by Woodrow Wilson in Paris.
