BIGGLESHas anyone else been listening to the radio programmes concerning Biggles, that marvellous creation of W.E. Johns? I was a great fan, although slightly disappointed when he joined the Air Police. I learned all I knew of how to be a fighter pilot from him. With his help I perfected my Immelmann turns which would have stood me in good stead in 1940 had I been more than 4yrs old at that time.
It was suggested that he was sexist, racist and probably several other 'ists' too that I can't remember; banned from many a public library but so was Enid Blyton. He created the character 'Worrall of the WAAF' too but his heart was not in it. I always had a sneaking suspicion that Worrall and Biggles might have been one and the same but - who knows?
It seemed his flying career extended over some 60 odd years. Not a bad career and unlike Sherlock Holmes he finally made his peace with his arch enemy. Ah well.

We need a Biggles every now and then. His deeds of daring do and the like got this country of many a dark period. I liked him and his mates.

I think his mates were Ginger and Algie Bill. His arch enemy was Von something or other. I'll remember his name soon.

It's Erich von Stalheim the arch evil whatsit. That took some digging up from the memory.

Just had a look at "Biggles" in wikepedia. It is well worth a read. I know you cant always trust the site,but this time it looks good. Wish every thing could be so easy!!
