Does size matter?

Yes Guys, We’re talking basic equipment here. What came before the AR 88? And was there anything to compare with the Racal RA17? I know Racal refined it with the RA17L, but somehow I don’t think it’s still being used, so what superseded it? The Eddison was taught during my time at 224, but I never saw it being used in anger or Cyprus. Is it possible to discover the chain of sets from those mounted in the wagons of ’51 to those that 14 Sigs were using at the end? Let’s not confine this just to the operating side, what were they like to maintain? Come on Mr Bee, you must have lost countless number of tiny nuts in the dark depths of receivers; now’s your chance to spill the beans. All the best. Dave T.

Hello David,
At Langeleben in 56 we were using the HRO Sets which were the ones where you had to change coils for different ranges.
I believe we did have an AR88 as well and at Räbke we had a R207.
Back at the regiment we were using R 206 R207 and the Edison which was a very unstable set.  We also had one B47 which was a Navy set.
I think we also had the Edison in Cyprus between 57 and 60.

Can't say I took much interest in the hardware at the time, but what set might I have been using as a voice-op in early 1958?  Most of my time was spent in the wagons, until the set room was built.

I left all this clever stuff to the 'Signals'. Getting a chisel point on my pencil was hard enough. I do remember the arrival of a Grundig recorder though for the voice chappies that recorded on to floppy brown plastic discs the size of an LP. It was pretty hopeless and we used to have to pack them up and send them either to Munchen Gladbach (that's what it was called in '56) or GCHQ. I believe it was superceded by an early type of tape machine

Does size Matter

Having busted a gut getting my head around tape reading at Garrats Hay during trade training I never came across it again even on my A2 course, did anyone ever use the tape machine in anger?
