Femails at war

In view of the sad news of the death of the first woman soldier in Afghanistan I wonder what the general view is of woman serving on the front line. Apparently approx 17000 femails serve in the British forces and it is inevitable that at some time they must be faced with being posted to areas of hostility. The fact that Sarah Bryant was Intellegence Corps makes the news  even more poignant.

Femails at War

Hi Ernie, Thanks for introducing a topic, things had gone very quiet. We all came from a time when women were nowhere near the front line, so although many of us served with women, there was never any chance of them facing enemy hostilities. It’s probably interesting to note that both the I Corps and R Signals were Corps in which women did jobs in parallel with men, and as far as I know did them very well, and there was seldom any doubt that they performed as equally well as the guys. Things have moved on, there are equal opportunities for all, and it is unfair to deny female soldiers the same risks and excitement of their male colleagues. It’s very sad that a female soldier was killed, just as it’s very sad that any soldier is killed in the line of duty. I expect most of us have suffered the death of a close friend, and the longer the conflict lasts the more likely it was that a female soldier would be killed, statically it was inevitable. Personally I’m a dinosaur and hate to think that woman are being put into danger, it goes against every principle I was brought up with. Now times are different, and we have no option but accept that in taking the money women also want to accept the risks and responsibilities.
All the best, Dave T.

I have just got back from Chicksands, Ernie and watching the Passing Out Parade I was struck by the fact that about a third were women. I think the I Corps can no longer exist without them. And the women officers must be chosen for their good looks. They are absolutely gorgeous and not in the slightest 'butch'. That is n ot a sexist remark in any way. Just a compliment and a fact.
