Guestbook VisitorsGood Morning Everyone.
Tom posted a pertinent sentiment onto the guestbook, for those who haven’t read it yertis
“We keep seeing messages from people who served at langeleben saying they had a great time there but for some reason do not join us. Why not?”
By way of encouraging these lost souls to join us, perhaps we could reply to their email addresses with a copy of “The Listening Post” and a postscript with how they can sign up. Conscious that what I am suggesting is more work for somebody, (Ernie? Marlene?) I am quite willing to give it a try, provided I’m not usurping anyone else’s territory. I thought perhaps a trawl through the guestbook say for initially this year and see what results are produced.
All the best.

Hi Dave
We have been on the case with this one since our mass collation of eveyones correct e-mail address prior to starting the project. When I did the first test run, many bounced so Ernie and I set out to find out why and whether the guestbook had clues. We were able to correct some and found others in other ways. But like you it showed us what you saw Dave and periodically I go there and if I see a new name and they served in Langeleben they get an electronic copy of The Listening Post.
Often they write back and Ernie press gangs them....
I think Ernie will confirm that our cunning ploy has resulted in new members since the newsletter began.
See what goes on behind the scenes?
Mind you all offers of help are gratefully received so if you would like to lend a hand with this, I am sure we would be happy to train you!

Hi Marlene,
Thanks for that, timing is everything. Offer to do something just as someone else is completing the task, that way it appears that you’re trying to be helpful, but in reality you don’t actually have to lift a finger. I’ve become a past master at this technique, just ask the wife! If I’ve been beaten to the post with that idea, just say what I can usefully do.
All the best.

Guest Book Visitors/ New Members.I have noticed the increased Membership recently, and Ernie & Marlene are to be congratulated for their work, 'behind the scenes' in this success.
Iam sure that our worthy admin staff do their homework on the new members to ensure qualification, etc., but my problem is that I don't know who they are, when reading their entry on the Members' page!
Great to welcome 'rodders', 'Trev' 'Caribou' and 'biff'.....but who are they???
The earlier Members seemed to have no objection in giving a name, address, and e mail address, but of late this info' seems to have been reduced to a minimum. Fare enough if they wish to keep their details secret, but is this in the spirit of things? Or am I just becoming a Grumpy Old Man??

Hi Bill,i raised the same subject in July 07,i can,t understand why any one of our member,s would want to hide behind a call sign and still live a covert existance,i will say one thing, after a few years they tend to come out into the open and identify themselves, best regards from ADAC.

I find that 55 years has dimmed the old memory somewhat. I have asked if we could show which Corps people belonged to on our membership list, not as a divisive measure IN ANY WAY but to help narrow down the search in the little grey cells for a flicker of memory I think this would help. Also, it's nice to know where to start a conversation. One is more likely to have something in common, if you have established right from the outset what job one did, to talk about. If you were I. Corps in the Old days at Langeleben you were usually outnumbered 10 to 1 anyway and so one's friends were nearly always pretty much spread around (I treasure my friendship with people like Bob Wells and Pete Ellis and have a wonderful photo of the three of us last month) otherwise one would have been pretty lonely!.
I found this loss of memory out with a vengeance at Konigslutter. Pete Jones (an Op Spec) and I (Int Corps) had worked together (and there was Bob Wells too) and had fun together as we recalled with enormous pleasure ; unlike me, the old So and So has aged a bit - only a little bit - but with a name like Pete Jones the fact that I had known him so well had faded from memory. He did however put the finishing touches to a story that I had related (was it in the 'History"?) of someone being locked up overnight by a girl he had picked up. Indeed it was 'Jones' and my memory was right in most respects other than he was locked up in a barn and not a windmill (much more romantic, Pete). He had not realised before the fuss that there was at his disappearance. It was thought that he had done a 'Patchett'. I, having been with him, was questioned extremely thoroughly and was scared stiff. I had no idea whether the So and So might be across the border since we had been in Helmstedt. It's these little bits of history coming together that make our visits to these re-unions so worthwhile. It was the same with meeting up with Ted Vert and Ron Berg.
I ramble!
I now look forward to seeing them once again at Loughborough or wherever we might end up together with any more who might come out of the wood work. It is marvellous that our membership is actually increasing when everything tells us it should be decreasing. Well done Ernie and Marlene. If I can do anything to help please ask I have vast amounts of time to spare hence my being able to write this drivel
