Mick Green

I have to announce the sad news that member Mick Green is gravely ill suffering with skin and blood cancer, Mick has not been well for the last three years and looked very frail at the last reunion in Konigslutter in 2007. He is at the moment being treated in a hospital in Dannenberg where he has lived for many years. We send our prayers and thoughts to Mick and his family at this critical time.

Sad news indeed. Especially, when I remember Mick as a very lively teenager in 1965. My thoughts are with him and his family.

I saw Mick last June in Dannenberg and although he was putting a brave face on things did mention he was in a bad way.  He still managed to send me a Christmas card.
Our thoughts are with him and his family.

We are saddened to hear this news too.  We heard from Bill Fry first, as I had been busy on newsletter things I hadn't been to the forum much so I included Mick in the mailings I sent to everyone today.  I hope that is going to be OK.  Trust me to put my foot in it.

Mick Green

I am a new member and Mick was one of the old acquantances that I was hoping to catch up with. We were together at 9Sigs and Langeleben. We also shared a room for 9 months on our language course at Cheltenham where he ended up as the best man at my wedding. So it is  quite a shock to find that he is unwell. If anyone is in contact with him give him my best wishes and hope that i can collect those Schultheisses he owes me.[/b]

Sad news I am afraid, Mick passed away in hospital on the evening of 3rd February, members of his family and old army friend Robin Seaward were at the bedside as he passed peacefully after years of ill health. Mick is to be cremated in Dannenberg sometime next week and his ashes will be returned to the UK for a family service on a date to be announced.

The following is an extract from an email I received from David Green, Mick's brother.  He asked me to pass this on via the Webmaster but I do not seem to be able to contact him.
Extract: We are attending a German Service, in Dannenberg/Splietau area, next Tuesday and we will arrange something in March- probably in Chelt/Glos area.
God Bless my big brother, now that he can rest peacefully and without further pain.

I have been in contact with Dennis Weir, who got stuck in the snows last week, but is now in Dannenberg.

The funeral is in Splietau at 1300. I will be driving up with John Sands, Robbie Seaward is already there, so the Branch will be well represented.

Michael's farewell.

[i]To all Members,
I would like to take this opportunity to thank FSL members for their messages of sympathy in respect of the sad passing of 'big brother' Michael, on February 3rd in Dannenberg. My family and I were aware and could evidently see how his cancer was spreading, over the last 2.5 years, but it was still a sad occasion to visit him in the hospital during his last few days. His Service, a week later, in Splietau was a mixture of German and English and it was good to see around 100 'locals' in attendance. Family members and a couple of 'old friends' were also present.
Additionally I would like to express my gratitude to Robbie Seaword, who was present during his last couple of days, and also Dennis Weir, who attended the Service and was there beforehand. It is fair to state that although I assisted my nephew and niece at first I was pleased that Robbie and Dennis could assist more, especially as I could net get my thoughts concentrated on my language skills.
Dennis and my family are now making plans for a Service to be held, hopefully in March and in the Chelt/Glos area, to which we hope many more 'old friends/colleagues' will be able to attend. In keeping with brother Michael's own wishes it will be a case of a few pints and singing along to a variety of Clancy Brothers songs.
Hope to see some of your soon and thanks once again.
Best Wishes, DavidG

A get Together to rembember Mick Green

On Friday 6th March between 13:00 and 18:00 some of Mick's friends will be getting together at the Cheltenham Civil Service Club on Tewkesbury Road.

Mick used to play Rugby there during his courses especially the Russian one in 1968-1969. A few of us who are still working or living in the Cheltenham Area are going to get together to remember his life.

Anyone is welcome to join us.

I would like to take this opportunity to express sincere thanks, on behalf of my family, for those who attended the recent 'Celebration of Life' for my brother Michael. I also want to thank everyone for using the various links for sending emails, some with photos attached, that I may respond to privately.
The opening words from Dennis and then John were well received and then, thankfully, my sisters and my nephew, Scott, were able to get their words out too. The afternoon then progressed in to a variety of laughing at stories and/or photos or mixing other occasions together - with a good deal of old friends/colleagues.
It is fair to say it was exactly the way that Mick/Mike would have liked it to be and, I am sure, there will be many an occasion in the future, for those unable to attend as well as others, to recall other stories from his successful career.
I look forward to the opportunity of mixing with friends again.
Best Wishes and grateful thanks to you all.
DavidG.
