The Langeleben book (1992)

Hi to everyone, whilst at one of our monthly meetings in York,a young fellow by the name of Charlie Charlesworth brought along a small booklet on the history of Langeleben which had belonged to one of our dear members Eric Sadler who sadly passed away a few years back, the book is very imformative and interesting, one of members took the book home and made some investigations in regard to getting it re-printed and found a printer in York who will print the book for £7-50p a copy,he has already ordered 7 copies for the Monthly York members,so if anyone else is interested in obtaining a copy please let me know, send me a e-mail to kenvipond@hotmail.com and i will pass on the request to John Newband,i must say that these books are definitely a collectors item and well worth having, best regards from Ken.

Thanks for the recommendation.Cool
The author of the book (who is well known to me and the Wolfenbüttel police) has instructed me to act for him in the question of royalties.  Razz

Please send all remunerations to:

Mr. JR Guhor
Treasurer Wolfenbüttel Police Benevolent Fund

For those who can't afford 7.50 quid, see here: http://www.langeleben.co.uk/history/history.htm
Ernie Callaghan

What JR is subtly saying is that he is tha author of the booklet and it is freely available on our website to just print off as many copies as you wish.

Dear John, thankyou so much for the reply regarding royalties for the sales of your book,it only came to light by chance and we thought the publication and printing had long gone into the archives and dust covered boxes, perhaps we should do a bit of advertising of the grand little book and raise a few bob for the club funds, please let me know how much i owe you and i will fax you the monies,or if you prefer to wait till June i will spoil you with drinks, best regards from Ken.

Just a thought, seeing that some of the photo's are from my collection any chance of a few of the royalties winging their way to this part of the country (Tee Hee)................??

I wrote this earlier in answer to Paul's enquiries in the "History" section of the forum. In the meantime a lot of the gaps in the book have been filled, so an updating could be feasible.

The small history had its origins as a souvenir programme for the close-down festivities, nothing more, and short contributions were invited from those ex-inmates we could contact in a short period of time, to cover the four decades of operations. In the event, some old comrades supplied a great amount of material, the late Sid Grimshaw, for instance, the unit pay clerk in the 50s, sent around ten pages of foolscap, containing much interesting detail. Others submitted equally interesting reminiscences from their times with the various units. Our President remembered carrying out the Recce to find the site; a member of the probe section dispatched to set up the first intercept operation related his experiences. Photographs added to the author's knowledge.

After a short time he realised that he had in his hands an (incomplete) short history of the unit. The author set to on the SQMS's PC and in a remarkably short space of time for him (about a week) produced the first draft. This was submitted to the Unit Security Officer, and CO for approval, which was forthcoming. Wolters' brewery paid for the printing. Obviously, at the time he was constrained by what could be said (or not) regarding operations. (Old habits die hard).

Unfortunately the original material was lost after the untimely death of our then Secretary, Frank Mitchell. Some of the original contributors are no longer among us.

I think JR is being too hasty in giving away his royalties. So far mine from the Langeleben LIVING HISTORY have enabled me to buy a small flat in Monte Carlo and a restored Aston Martin DB5

That's good to hear Paul. Here was I thinking "Corgi" had gone out of business. All the best. Dave.
