Was it trueHi everyone
I was thinking back to my early days at Langeleben when Miss H ran us down to Helmstedt. I took a couple of photos which are in our album here. There were men in the towers of course and the MP took us across to the East on foot. However as he escorted us back to the West he warned us to walk backwards otherwise we would have been shot in the back for escaping. Taking no chances I did as he said. I was just 19 years old and a bit naive, but was he telling the truth? It has always puzzled me.
Also I was told that there is a pub where the pub was in the West but the loo was in the East so no-one dared use it.
Please, someone, can you end a 40 year old mystery?

The basic rule was thet having been at the wire if a person turned to walk away they were considered fair game for a 7.62mm ball full metal jacket pat on the back.
It was in the case against Honiker that he gave the gaurds permission to shoot to kill anybody walking away from the wire towards the west, the white posts had the top painted red for calibrating the sniper rifles.
