Some of the activities to while away off duty hours. Football, taking part or watching. Sailing trips to Steinhude on day trips, or Keil for longer trips. Both venues had a British club. Skiing trips to the Hartz. During 1961 a Parade Square was laid down, The only time one was allowed on it wearing boots was if you were the goalkeeper playing 5 a side Hockey. So it wasnt all visiting all the local hostelrys!! Gerry K

I went to a rugby playing school and anyway, was excused games. We never had the chance of sailing - not on offer. I had one trip to Bad Harzberg over the 15 months. The skis (4 pairs) were old fashioned wooden, and they could not be fastened on to our ammunition boots with any certainty of their staying on and the Canadian boots were totally hopeless which is why the photos always showed us standing still!
A square? We had just an uneven field.
Don't shed too many tears for us though.
cheers

Hello to all our readers.
If you have read the copy of the History and I know it is hard work reading from the computer screen, please let Paul know even if at this stage you have no comment to make at least after all his hard work he will know that we are reading it.
Personally in the main I think it is very good and look forward to seeing a published version in the future.
Tom

Thanks Tom. You are right about the Russian Officers. They are being moved to the end as an appendix type thing*. You are also right about it looking better with pictures too! The trouble is that I rely totally on Tom for all this clever stuff. he hasn't let me down yet.
had a note fro Gerry who rightly points out that it needs input from the younger members, also didn't women serve there too. Can they not right -- oops write?
It is a fact that one comes to an interest in history later in life but we mustn't leave it too late.

* I am expecting young Putin to take revenge any second and cut off my gas supply. i have a secret weapon ready. I will write the truth about the flag over the Reichstag building. Damn it! I'll send it to Tom anyway as it is quite a good story (in my opinion)

Quite rightly, Ken Vipond kindly pointed out the lack of humour in the Living Historyl.
I agree but I am not known for my wit nor was a lot of my Service very amusing, so .....
Its up to you lot to put a smile on Ken's face. He supplied an anecdote about an aviary being built by a surplus to requirements NCO. I believe him!
If you remember the old Readers Digest ncolumn "Humour in Uniform" that's my pattern so start writing you miserable lot

I have just spent 4 very happy hours.
I thought that perhaps I could extract enough from one of the Forum subjects to make a contribution to the Living History.
It has turned out to be really interesting and amusing and I have.
Amazingly it is 19 pages long and the range of subjects is bewildering. It was before the departure of Mr Hudson and at a time when Mr Shorep was contributing far more.
If I went on my hands and knees, would the prodigal sons return? Their absence is amply demonstrated by the dearth of entries at the moment.

Thanks to 'Skip', I found my way to www.nasaa-home-org/asa. Try it!
Possibly it is known to you already; it certainly is to Ernie. Is there anyone around who was at Langeleben at the time they are talking about? If so, did we have the same reaction to the invasion scare? It wa just before my time
There was a 'move-out' during my time post July 1955 as I have photos of it and there are huts in the background. I thought however that it was just an exercise. I know it took days for people to get back and settled in. Any more info greatly appreciated. There was another scare and I recall being driven at great speed by Capt. Wallace I Corps up to the Elbe to see for ourselevs what was going on and that was when I saw my first Russians! The second was when, looking out of the window we saw the Soviet Military Mission car parked in the road outside. We did get after them but far too slow and too late.
Also, there is the one mention of the site being buzzed by a MIG. I can't (for the moment) recall who told us this for the history but again - any more information please? Someone else MUST recall the occasion and the date.
John Richardson is back and has cast his beady, learned, eye over the History to date, correcting some errors (on my part). In addition he mentions that contributions are heavily biased towards National service times and contributors. He noticed too!
This is not the result of heavy or any editing, I promise; what I have had is 'in'.
The contributions are just not coming in, yet. I have extracted promises from several people and I just have to hope they come up with the goods.
I am just about to ask Tom to put an updated edition on to the web so if anyone is just dotting the last 'T's and crossing the last I's can they hurry up and get their contributions to me.
Don't forget Ken's comment so - MORE HUMOUR PLEASE. As Mr Hudson kindly points out you can't expect anything much in that area from me!

I have had a contact from Dave Rawlings (not yet a member) who queries why I have not mentioned "12 Wireless Sqdn" and "Degerndorf-Brannenberg".
The simple answer that I gave him was that I had not heard of either. I have asked him for more details - he mentions Mike Dawkins Laurie Storie etc between June 1957 and Aug 1958. He seems to have served at Langeleben between Sept 58 and Jan 59 so he could have been either National Service or a regular. He also mentioned 9Regt Berlina nd Dannenberg (at last a name that I recognize!). Can anyone fill in the gaps and I hope that Dave will let us have more too. He says he has Langeleben photos - the more the merrier.
Whilst on the site. Please can I have those Living History stories that have been promise and tose which have not been promised. I would like to get Tom to put an updated and extended version on the web soon so ...PLEASE.
Finally, a heartfelt thanks to all of you who have sent me personal messages. It has been a trerrible shock but your support has been wonderful

Thanks Dave
There are some virtues in suffering from congenital verbal diarrhoea. If anyone actually enjoys my demented burblings (all or some of the 600) I am absolutely delighted!

Hi Paul,
With reference to 12 Wireless Squadron. This unit was stationed originally based in Graz, Austria until the early fifties and then it moved to Degerndorf, in Bavaria. It was then disbanded in June/July 1958. It was then reformed in Birgelin as 12 Wireless Squadron(Trials). After that it was then called 225 Signal Squadron(Radio) I Hope that helps you.

Thanks Jim.
I nearly thought that I understood and then ... weren't Messrs Shorep and Hudson at 225? Is this the same 225 or was it another re-birth.
Perhaps someone can draw me a pretty picture of how everything joined together.
I actually recall now, through the mists of time, that I knew about "12 Sqdn" and Graz. As I've said before, I've never got my head around unit numbers
